Canoptera

Canoptera
David Pérez Medina / Estudio Pérez Medina

We aim to model the insect world by transforming used drink cans. Approximately 750.000 species of insects have been identified, and estimates lead us to believe that number may reach 30 million, making the project an apparently impossible undertaking for one individual. With that in mind, we developed Canoptera as an entertaining workshop for all, based on the Kirigami technique, which develops the capacities of synthesis, spatial vision, transition from two to three dimensions, and manual dexterity, and to encourage students, designers, and non-designers to collaborate in reuse as many cans as possible to represent all the species of insects in the world. Canoptera Project

Our taste for the look of Victorian drawing rooms whose walls are replete with framed entomological specimens, together with a lack of desire for hunting small insects, and a near-obsessive appreciation of objects with no apparent value, led us to develop Canoptera as a collaborative workshop under a Creative Commons license.
Developped by David Pérez Medina. Thanks to Elisa Crespo, Pilar González, Barbara Carcangiu, Diego Bravo and Pablo García Robla.
